Notes On Stepney Green
Now Stepney Green in east London may be known for many things – Blitz damage, a vibrant immigrant community and the lovely Georgian Arbour Square – but it doesn’t generally come to mind when searching for boutique London digs. This would be a mistake, because London’s most bijou accommodation can be found here at 40Winks, the fantastical Queen Anne townhouse of interior designer, David Carter.
So what are you up to this Sunday in London? We’ve polished our tastevin and are hot-footing it to the East End for a thrilling weekend fix of fine wines au naturel, posh hot dogs and Soho bistro soup at the RAW Artisan Wine Fair. RAW is the genius idea of Isabelle Legeron, aka That Crazy French Woman, who’s passionate about promoting small wine producers and drinking wines that have a living presence. Many of them you won’t see on restaurant menus, others have competitive cult followings, but this weekend you can taste, try and buy to your heart’s content.
The iconic landmarks for which Paris is known the world over rarely feature in the photography of Nichole Robertson which is precisely what makes her photographs so compelling and refreshingly different. One look at her disarmingly casual snaps of simple details and objects – flowers at the market, a doorknob, a café terrace on a rainy day – and you cannot help but smell baguettes baking in the boulangerie, hear Parisians gaily chatting over an after-work apéro, taste the sweet perfection of macarons tucked inside a peppermint-green Ladurée cake box.
The Weekender
Raffish, raucous Naples is often dismissed as Italy's misbehaving, bad boy metropolis - a graffiti-strewn circus of littered piazzas, potholes, and pickpockets. But we love it, and we’ll tell you why. What many detractors forget to mention is that this former royal capital is also one of Europe's cultural heavyweights and the greater Naples area is a culinary overachiever. What more could you want for a perfect weekend?
